Little Yellows

Last year I got a nice picture of a wad of baby garden spiders (Argiope aurantia) amongst the grass. This year, the backdrop was a little less picturesque. Mid May we found they had infested Emmett's tricycle.

I was able to get several better macro shots this time though.

Here they are, all cocooned under a layer of webbing...

...until you shake them and they scatter!

All balled up...

...all shaken out. Yes, we had fun messing with them.

You do have to watch out when you shake them up though... They drop off tendrils of web that can easily float into you!

This guy must have lost his web tendril, and was stuck trying to climb back up the red metal bar. He kept losing his grip.

Mostly back to cozied up.

Emmett was fascinated, but not a fan of their choice of home. They're long gone now and likely only one to a couple of them have survived to  Last year I didn't ever spot an adult garden spider anywhere, we'll see this year. I'm not sure I really want to see a grown one, they're really creepy looking all grown up, but I would like to see the zig zag pattern web they make. I can't help but wonder how they got on the trike. Was the adult female living under the tray where we didn't notice her? Creepy.

They are kind of colorful and interesting but in a picture is close enough for me. When you see the adult a picture will also be sufficient. CREEPY!

Impressive macros!! Those critters are TINY. I love the expression on his face in that last shot. :)
