At first it looked like something just crawled out of its cocoon?
But definitely not - those are legs and eyes - it must be molting...
Look how brave I got to show you how big this thing was...
Then Travis brought a ruler.
So, does anyone have any ideas? And is that some sort of stinger on its rear, maybe I was a little too brave...

I met Travis in Institute at Oregon State University in 2001 and we were married Aug 2002. We have 3 boys, Avery, Carson and Emmett. I love photography and run a business,
Travis is a dentist at
Avery was born in Dec 2004 and is now 7 and almost a 2st grader. He loves being a big brother to Carson and Emmett.
Carson was born in March of 2007 and is now 5 years old.
Emmett was born in September of 2008 and is now almost 4 years old.

Crimeny! If that is a stinger and it is extended it's a little too much for me. If it does sting anyone it's liable to lose its whole rear end.
Is it a katydid? That would be my guess even though the legs look a little short. . .
its a cicada! Haven't you heard the loud pitch noises outside in the trees at night? Look at my blog I just wrote about them a few days ago. www.clansayers.blogspot.com I think I had 2 different post about them.
I thought it was a cicada too. Have you heard them around your yard? I found the exoskeleton of one at the base of our tree here--pretty impressive.
